Let's take a breath

To discuss what we've learned so far about rhetoric and composing starts back from Aristotle's time to current day. Even though theories of Aristotle's view on rhetoric may be old it is has validity today and it plays as a foundation of how we compose rhetoric today.

Rhetorical situation shows that rhetoric always has a purpose. Also, that we have to keep in consideration not just the writer but also the audience and situation. Rhetorical situation adjusts depending on the situation and audience.

To begin with the most basic processes a writer goes through while composing are the 5 canons.
5 canons: Invention, this is “the first stage of composing” and Aristotle argues that invention is the most important part/stage of composing.
Arrangement is the stage of composing when you organize your speech where it’s going to be most effective.
Style is one of the most obvious stages, every individual has a unique voice and I believe that your speech or rhetoric is most effective when you’re being yourself.

Memory is being able to remember what you want to talk about. Memory is a very important part for people whose jobs revolve around speaking in public. For example, you never see politicians reciting their speech word for word from a piece of paper or notecard.
Finally, delivery is the part of speech and rhetoric of using gestures and facial expressions that support your speech.

Remediation is an important part rhetoric. Technology changed the way we communicate, socialize, educate and learn. Through technology all of the following these have been remediated. I believe that remediation is important because it not only opens venues for different ways of learning it also encourages the discovery of new forms of media. Music has always been important to me and I think it’s a great example. The devices we use to listen to music is completely different from our parents’ generation or even when we were kids. From record players, tape players, walkmans, CD players and mp3s, all of these devices have been remediated. This has a lot to do with writing and composing because the way we write has been remediated. People generally use the computer (Word) to write a paper rather than a type-writer or even pen and paper.

Editing is also an important aspect of composing. With editing the most important thing I took from reading the articles and different theories of editing is to keep focused on the purpose/ goal of my writing.
